Approximately one third of US adults have basic or below basic health literacy skills and health literacy is implicated in translating health knowledge to health behaviors. Yet, few studies examine the effect of health literacy on their preventive health outcomes. Further, populations most at risk for low health literacy are identical to those at risk for health disparities. The purpose of this Brown Bag Special Interest Group is to discuss how health literacy could be further incorporated in prevention research, as well as, explore ideas for collaborations.
