3-005 PLENARY SESSION II: PREVENTION IN PRIMARY CARE: INVESTMENTS, POLICY AND IMPLEMENTATION

The purpose of this plenary session is to provide (1) an overview of the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) strategies and the overall goals, policies, and processes related to integrating evidence based prevention into primary care and (2) a presentation of research addressing implementation and policy initiatives of prevention in primary care. Speakers will discuss their research, real-world examples, and policy implications.

The first speaker, Dr. David Grossman is a pediatrician and senior investigator at the Kaiser Permanente Washington Health Research Institute in Seattle. He is also the senior associate medical director for market strategy and public policy for KP Washington. As Chairperson of the USPSTF, Dr. Grossman will provide an overview of the task force’s strategies and policies related to integrating evidence based prevention into primary care. In addition, Dr. Grossman will present his research on delivery system-based innovations to improve preventive services and will discuss developing and implementing population-based prevention programs.

The second speaker, Dr. Kelly Kelleher, is a pediatrician, director of the Center for Innovation in Pediatric Practice, and vice president of Health Services Research at The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital. His research interests focus on accessibility, effectiveness and quality of health care services for children and their families. Dr. Kelleher will present research on the implementation of prevention programs in primary care with a specific focus on prevention interventions targeting child maltreatment, and promoting parenting and child development.

The third speaker, Dr. John Landsverk is a senior research scientist at the Oregon Social Learning Center, and has served as the Scientific Director of the California Evidence-Based Clearinghouse for Child Welfare since 2004. Dr. Landsverk’s recent research focuses on implementation research related to public child welfare and child mental health service systems. Dr. Landsverk will present a structured review of preventive parenting interventions in primary care and discuss overall adoption, challenges, and opportunities.
