The purpose of this symposium is to examine current trends and research in integrating prevention of substance use in the primary care setting. Particular attention will be given to how evidence-based prevention interventions are implemented and sustained in primary care settings. Speakers will discuss their research, real-world examples, and policy implications.

The first speaker, Dr. Connie Weisner, is the Chief of Behavioral Health, Aging, and Infectious Diseases at the Division of Research, Kaiser Permanente and a Professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco. Her program of research addresses access, outcome, and cost effectiveness of substance use and mental health treatment. Dr. Weisner will discuss her ongoing research related to the integration of alcohol, drug, and mental health services within the healthcare system.

Dr. Ty Ridenour, the second speaker, is a Senior Research Analyst at Research Triangle Institute and an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Ridenour will present his research on developing and testing an SBIRT for prevention of youth substance abuse and chronic behavior problems. His presentation will focus on study outcomes and implementation in pediatric primary care.

The final speaker will be Dr. Guillermo “Willy” Prado, who is the Leonard M. Miller Professor of Public Health Sciences, director of the Division of Prevention Science and Community Health at the Miller School of Medicine, and dean of the Graduate School at the University of Miami. Dr. Prado is a prevention scientist with expertise in health disparities research, intervention science, and the application of advanced statistical methods to intervention science. Dr. Prado will present findings from a pilot study evaluating the feasibility of integrating an eHealth family-based preventive intervention for Hispanic youth in primary care and the design of a NIDA/NIH funded R01 study evaluating the effectiveness of an eHealth family-based preventive intervention in four primary care settings in South Florida.
