Symposium Organizer:
Tasha Perdue
Discussant:
Celia Williamson
The goal of this symposium is to present results on the impact of the opiate epidemic in Ohio by examining the changing markets, effects on the community, and structural approaches to prevention and intervention. The symposium supports the conference themes of epidemiology and etiology and building healthier communities through investments in prevention. The symposium brings together Ph.D. students under guidance from a mentor well established in this topical area. The researchers represent three institutions across the United States and have been actively conducting research on substance abuse trends.

The first paper, “Changing Opiate Markets in Ohio” offers a historical discussion on the shift in substance use from prescription opiates to heroin, including changes in the drug market and pricing changes. This paper highlights the role of policy in addressing changes in drug markets on the state and national level.

The second paper, “Opiate Related Health Impacts and Opiate Overdoses in Ohio” provides participants with information on injection drug use behaviors, health related outcomes, and overdoses within the state. Recommendations for prevention and intervention are included.

The third paper, “Risk Environment of the Opiate Market in Ohio” applies the risk environment framework to the opiate epidemic in Ohio. Structural and systemic factors are discussed, with an emphasis on the political risk environment and harm reduction prevention strategies.

At the conclusion of the presentations, the discussant will provide summary statements and initiate a discussion between the presenters and the symposium attendees. It is anticipated that the discussion of the policy and practice recommendations for substance use and overdose prevention will appeal to the SPR Annual Meeting participants.
