Over 35 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS worldwide. In the U.S. alone, approximately 50,000 new infections each year contribute to the 1.2 million people estimated to be living with HIV. These prevalence and incidence rates are unacceptably high despite many scientific breakthroughs both domestically and internationally, and are disproportionately high among men who have sex with men, ethnic minorities, youth, and people who use drugs. Prevention efforts targeted at these at risk subgroups are critically needed. Our three speakers will focus on HIV prevention efforts with diverse, at-risk populations spanning from etiological to intervention research. Dr. Seth Kalichman will present on research being conducted in South African aimed at understanding whether alcohol consumption of men in alcohol-serving establishments is predictive of women’s risk for HIV in those same establishments. Dr. Colleen Hoff will present on relationship dynamics, sexual behavior, health, conflict resolution, and relationship power in ethnic minority MSM couples. Finally, Dr. Ralph Diclemente will present on the design and the preliminary findings of the Juvenile Justice-Translational Research on Interventions for Adolescents in the Legal System (JJ-TRIALS), a cooperative implementation science research.
