3-023 SIG: Genetics and the Prevention of Behavioral Disorders—Moving the Science Forward

Schedule:
Thursday, May 29, 2014: 12:00 PM-1:00 PM
Regency C (Hyatt Regency Washington)
Speakers/Presenters:
Aria Davis Crump and Marcia S. Scott
Years of research has demonstrated that the development of behavioral disorders is influenced by both genetic and environmental factors.  More recently, scientists have begun to probe questions regarding the role of genetics in prevention research.  While much attention has been given to early research on the role of genetic factors may play in moderating the effects of preventive interventions, further development of this and related research is needed in order to fully inform the efforts of prevention scientists and the needs of communities.  The purpose of this brown bag session is to convene investigators and program staff from the National Institutes of Health in a dialogue about 1) the role of findings of genetic influence on health behaviors in the design of prevention interventions and 2) the inclusion of research aims related to genetics in prevention research trials.  Participants will discuss strengths and weaknesses of existing research, approaches to refining research questions, methodological challenges and opportunities, the need for collaboration and interdisciplinary teams, the needs and concerns of community members asked to provide biological samples, and opportunities for research and practice.
